We have all been there when you are filling out a job application you upload your resume and cover letter hit submit and for those brief five seconds you are feeling accomplished. Then Boom! A notification appears and thanks you for applying to the position and ask you to take a few minutes to complete the employment application. Huh?! Is that not what I just did? You want to gripe and moan, but you need this job, so you accept the request to complete the employment application, and you think this probably won't take too long. Then it comes and lo and behold they want your entire DNA and possibly your mothers too. You make it through the CIA security clearance they inadvertently labeled "employment application" and hit submit thinking you are done. Then another message appears thanking you for completing the application and now requesting that you take a few more minutes and answer the brief questionnaire to determine if you're a good fit for the company.

Wait so, you mean to tell me the pre-employment application and actual employment application were not enough for you to determine if I am a suitable candidate? But again, you made it this far, and you are really interested in the position, so you decide to take the "brief" questionnaire only to find that it is a combination of Calculus, The Quantum Theory, and the Myer Briggs Theory all-in-one. Oh, and I forgot to mention its 100 questions, and it's timed! Is anyone else feeling the side-eye emoji coming on? Sweat drenching, fingers weakened, and your mental capacity is declining, but you finally finish! This is it you are done! You look up, and it is now midnight. Lol, hopefully not but you get the picture. Job applications can be extremely stressful, and it is easy to want to abandon the application, but I cannot encourage you enough to resist the urge. Just think of how many other people started the same application and stopped. According to Careerbuilder.com, 60% of job seekers quit in the midst of filling out online job applications because of their length and complexity. Do not become a statistic, below are some steps to take when applying for jobs online.

  1. Start early (think of applying for a job as a job start around 8:00 and end at 4:30 )

  2. Find a quiet place (allow yourself to concentrate on the task and provide the most accurate information)

  3. Set a goal (do not just start applying blindly, set realistic goals for the day)

  4. Take a break (walk away from the computer, take a lunch, or go for a walk)

  5. Breathe (remember 60% of people abandon job applications you are not alone stay focused)
